Marine Bill Receives Royal Assent
The Marine and Coastal Access Act received Royal Assent on November 12th. The Act will create a new marine planning system designed to bring together the conservation, social and economic needs of our seas. A network of Marine Conservation Zones will be created that will protect rare and threatened species and habitats. Four regional projects have started working with local boaters and marine businesses, among others, to identify which areas will be designated as Marine Conservation Zones in English waters. Look out for communications from Finding Sanctuary (South West); Net Gain (North Sea); Balanced Seas (Eastern Channel) and Irish Sea Conservation Project (the Irish Sea!) If you can spare them any time, tell them about where you go boating, it will help them and the wider boating understand where the prime boating areas are when putting these zones into place.
Businesses will also benefit from a more streamlined consenting and licensing system through the creation of the Marine Management Organisation. A new range of sanctions will also provide a more flexible approach to marine environment enforcement.

Funding Secured for Scottish Post.

We are delighted to announce that The Green Blue has managed to secure funding for the programme to continue in Scotland. Scottish Natural Heritage will fund a further two years work which means that we will be able to continue working with marinas, clubs and boaters to raise awareness and encourage behaviour change.
Project Manager, Sarah Brown who was married earlier this year, spent her honeymoon cruising around the Western Isles of Scotland and was so taken with the beautiful coast and fresh air that she will be moving to Scotland in the New Year to take on the role of Regional Advisor for The Green Blue. As well as rolling out the programme in Scotland, Sarah will be keeping a watching brief on environmental issues relating to boating in Wales and Northern Ireland. She will also continue to look after the research database and will build on the work done by Julia Christie who left in May: raising awareness and working with Scottish businesses and clubs to help them save money and make environmental improvements by taking them through the marine toolkit.
Sarah’s move to Scotland leaves a vacancy for a Project Manager in Hamble, and we are pleased that Jane Swan, Partnerships Officer (and Acting Project Manager during Sarah’s sabbatical) will be taking on this role. Both start their new jobs in January and we wish them all the best
And Finally
Our congratulations go to The Green Blue Ambassador, Mike Golding, for securing third place in the Transat Jacques Vabre.
