clean as a whistle The Green Blue gets 'clean as a whistle!'

Anyone visiting The Green Blue stand at Southampton Boat Show this year may well have wondered where the smell of lemon and vinegar was wafting from. This is because every weekend we were encouraging children to become 'clean as a whistle', demonstrating that boat bits such as fenders and cleats can be cleaned just as effectively with natural ingredients and without using harmful chemicals. All the children who took part won a whistle whilst parents received a bottle of Ecover washing up liquid and a Green Blue magic biodegradable sponge! The help from Green Volunteers was vital in delivering this successful activity, so many thanks to Kate, Jane, Deborah and Josh (pictured).

The Green Blue Sailing Super Star Auction Site

Dee Caffari and Mike Golding helped launch the Sailing Super Stars Auction with Sailing Networks last week at Southampton Boat Show. The site offers a chance to bid for the jacket that kept Mike Golding warm while preparing for his last dramatic race, or the jacket from record breaker Dee Caffari, you could even bid to buy the shirt from Sir Robin Knox-Johnstons back! The money raised from this auction will go towards the Marine Conservation Society's Beachwatch Campaign.

The super star auction marks the birth of the Green Blues’ new ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ website. The site, hosted on the Sailing Networks website (www.sailingnetworks.com), invites people to be more pro-active in their support of the environment, showcasing a new car share scheme aimed specifically at boaters. The scheme helps boaters find transport to those difficult to get to harbours and marinas, alleviate ever increasing parking constraints and most importantly reduce their carbon emissions and environmental impact at the same time.

Trade talk

ecop What are you sending to landfill?

New guidance has been issued on the requirement for non-hazardous waste treatment prior to landfilling, as required by the Landfill Directive. From 30th October 2007, non-hazardous waste must be treated before it can be sent to landfill. Non-hazardous liquid wastes will be banned completely. Treatment can be classified as a physical, thermal, chemical or biological process including sorting.

The guidance has been published by the Environment Agency and is designed to help business and industry meet the changes to landfill regulations which come into play later this year. You should review how your business manages its waste and speak to your waste management contractor about this new requirement.

You and your boat

Autumn wildlife on the water

October marks the changing of the seasons as the colour of the landscape fades from green to an autumnal brown. Some sailors are thinking about closing up their craft for the winter but while boating can be a chilly experience – especially later on in the month – there is still a relative abundance of wildlife out there to experience.

Follow our cruising log
