Chris Packham launches the Volvo Eco Challenge to help clubs become more environmentally friendly

An exciting new challenge has been launched today by TV personality and environmentalist Chris Packham.  The sport of sailing is seen as an environmentally friendly sport, but research has proven that sailing clubs are struggling to comply with current environmental legislation.  Volvo Car UK, a long term sponsor of sailing in the UK, supported by The Green Blue, have created the Volvo Eco Challenge, a new scheme for young environmentalists with £20,000 of grants available exclusively for Volvo RYA Champion Clubs in order to assist them to become more environmentally friendly.

“Sailing depends on a sustainable marine environment. The Volvo Eco Challenge is an opportunity for clubs and sailors to make a real difference to their local environment and to heighten awareness of the very real issues affecting our world.  Volvo RYA Champion Club’s are already committed to excellence in the field of race training for youngsters – so they are an excellent test bed for actions that improve the environment by taking part in this challenge.” Rod Carr OBE, RYA Chief Executive

Sailing clubs are classified as commercial waste producers and therefore have a duty of care with regards to waste under current environmental legislation with penalties for non-compliance. The scheme will provide individual grants of £100-£1000 to individual Volvo RYA Champion Clubs to fund projects carried out by young people aged 10-16, to improve their environmental impact,  implement good environmental practice and assist them in complying with environmental legislation.

The RYA in partnership with The Green Blue, have produced a handbook for clubs and recognised training centres to help them understand the environmental issues and legal requirements when operating waterside facilities “The Planning and Environmental Handbook”. This will be an excellent tool to assist clubs when they are evaluating their environmental impact and applying for their share of the £20,000 grant pot.

“Every positive step towards environmental improvement is important, every sailing club in the UK can play their part cleaning up our waters and we are delighted that Volvo have created this great opportunity for clubs all around the country to put their dreams into action!”  Said Sarah Black, Project Manager for The Green Blue.

The new initiative was launched today at the RYA Dinghy Show, Alexandra Palace (Saturday 1st March) by Chris Packham - Television presenter, wildlife photographer and Author. “The Volvo Eco Challenge is a great opportunity for Volvo RYA Champion Clubs to get actively involved in an environmental project. I am always keen to work where there is both enthusiasm and a need to help overcome an environmental issue. It’s all about working together to assist groups that are struggling.”

Volvo's commitment to the environment covers the entire lifecycle of the car, from design, engineering and production to useful life, service and recycling. Over the last forty years, Volvo has reduced the environmental impact of car manufacturing by a significant extent. All new cars are now 85% recyclable, and designed for 95% recoverability.

“As a car manufacturer, Volvo has accepted the responsibility to develop and build cleaner cars. But to reach for a cleaner society we must work together with others to develop and encourage new environmental initiatives. With the Volvo Eco Challenge, Volvo hopes to bring forward members of a new generation who are ready to think creatively to reduce environmental impact in their local sailing community.” Explained Lesley Milne, Events & Sponsorship Manager, Volvo Car UK on the challenge ahead.
