Winners of our Photography Competition Announced

Record breaking solo sailor Dee Caffari and Mike Golding, one of the world’s best offshore racing sailors today (Friday 11 September) unveiled the winners of The Green Blue’s photography competition; ‘The Good, The Bad and The Funny’ at the PSP Southampton Boat Show.

In ‘The Good’ category it was David Cardy from Selsdon in Surrey who claimed the winner’s prize of a Henri Lloyd Shore jacket with his image of ‘Dolphins at play’ which was taken from the bow of a tourist boat (The Ionian Princess) in Lefkada, Greece.

In ‘The Bad’ category, Dominic Walton’s ‘Nest ‘o’ trash’ took the honours. Dominic from Southsea in Hampshire took the picture of the nesting birds and chicks on the North Sea Canal in Amsterdam, whilst in ‘The Funny’ category it was Andrew Stewart, from Alresford, Hampshire’s basking ‘Sea lions in San Francisco’ who claimed the win. Both Dominic and Andrew also received a Henri Lloyd Shore jacket.

Judged by Lady Pippa Blake, artist and Ambassador for The Green Blue, Graham Snook, professional photographer (IPC media) and Colin Speedie, marine researcher, photographer and initiator of the Wise Scheme the three winners then went head to head for the title of overall winner. It was David Cardy who clinched the title, winning himself a Canon Powershot D10 Camera.

Of the winning photo Graham Snook said: “Beautiful, calm and deep azure blue waters with a small pod of dolphins under the bow of the boat. It’s a clean, simple image that shows all that is good about the sea. Seeing dolphins is always a magical experience, and one that fewer people can see if the sea becomes polluted.”

David said of his win: “I’m delighted to have won, thank you very much for voting me the winner.”

Dominic who won ‘The Bad’ category went on to say: “Looking after the environment is a real no brainer, it makes sense not to pollute our waters”, wise words having viewed his picture!

In the under 16’s category, it was 15 year old Jennifer Whittaker’s photo of Lough Key Weir that claimed the winners title and prize of a Henri Lloyd Shore jacket, buoyancy aid and fleece hat from the Ben Ainslie Range.

Dee and Mike, who are both Ambassadors for The Green Blue, also spoke of their recent endeavours including Mike’s adventures on the Extreme 40’s and Dee’s recording breaker trip around Britain.

Jane Swan from The Green Blue, the environmental programme of the RYA and BMF, said: “We received some fantastic entries in to the competition which really brought the different categories to light. Congratulations and thanks to all our entrants.”
