Environmental Impact of pleasure craft, fishing vessels and working vessels

The purpose of the study was to carry out a survey of the environmental impact of small craft with respect to exhaust emissions and sewage discharges.

Author: Anon
Year: 1994
Document Source: Swedish Environmental Protection Agency ISBN 91-620-4307-2
Avalability: Grey literature

Interaction: Water Quality
Confidence: Good
Quantified: Data based on models
Interaction significance: Not a focus of the work
Purpose of research: Research Report commissioned by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency
Context: Refers to all small boats in Sweden, including pleasure craft (276000), fishing (5800) and working vessels (2900). The emissions were presented as a percentage of the total (and not taking into account the numbers of vessels involved) but indicate that pleasure craft emit 96% of the hydrocarbon and 9.5% of the nitrogen oxides. Pleasure craft are estimated to produce 17800m3 of sewage per year (equivalent to double that of treated sewage) and fishing vessels about 1100m3 per year.
Mitigation/Best practice: Implementation of standards on emissions for marine engines and provision of information on where sewage can be discharged.
