Summary of the environmental interactions of the recreational boating sector and key data gaps

This report summarises the findings of a desk based literature review relating to the environmental interactions of recreational boating. Of key interest during the review were datasets that quantified the actual interactions between recreational boating and the environment, together with information on effective mitigation measures. Data gaps are highlighted for each interaction and prioritised to provide focus for future research. Key areas identified as having high priority include the effectiveness of non-toxic antifoulants, an assessment of the significance of antifoulant use in freshwater, information on fuel efficiency, use and methods for improving fuel efficiency. Others included quantifying the volume of oil spilt, the discharge of grey water, and nutrient and bacterial discharges from the recreational boating sector.
